How Much Can Drinking Alcohol Increase Your Chances of Living Longer?

We all have heard in the past that drinking alcohol is very unhealthy for us, but a recent study made by the Maastricht University Medical Centre in The Netherlands will definitely change your opinion on that.

According to this study, drinking alcohol can actually make you live a long and happy life. Of course, everything should be done in moderation. This research claims that drinking a small amount of alcohol every day will bring you more health benefits than abstaining from alcohol completely.

The recommended quantity is 5–15 g/d of alcohol, which for ordinary people should be a glass of wine or a pint of beer. In addition to that, any everyday consumption that exceeds this limit will have a detrimental effect, raising the chances of premature death.

Dr Piet A. van den Brandt said:

“We found alcohol intake was positively associated with the probability of reaching 90 years of age in both men and women. Wine was associated with women reaching 90 but not with men. Instead, intake of gin, brandy and whisky increased their longevity.”

The reason behind the benefits of drinking alcohol is still unknown, but we have to keep in mind that everything should be done in moderation. So next time you want to treat yourself after a hard day at work, you can have a glass of wine and be sure that it will do no harm to your health.
