Sam Smith is one of the most popular artists at the moment, but little do some of his fans know that now they identify as a non-binary person. What does this mean?
This means that Sam doesn’t identify as a man or as a woman anymore. Furthermore, this gender identity doesn’t mean sexual orientation and is for sure a different concept. If a person informs you that they are a non-binary person, you should better ask them what this means to them because they can either identity both as a man or as a woman, or neither of this ones. And, in fact, gender shouldn’t matter at all. What matters is the person’s identity and their actions.
Sam made it very clear that they prefer the pronouns “they/them”. So from now on, everyone should use this pronoun when talking about the singer.
The artist made this announcement last September, but since then, people still don’t use the pronouns they prefer:
“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.[…] I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”
After this announcement, Sam understood that people will find it difficult to adapt to the change and this will be a long process. Taking that into consideration, the artist is ready to wait until the wold will understand and accept their decision. Also, all their hope is in the younger generation, that seems more likely to accept non-binary people and respect their preferred pronouns.
That being said, the world should stop putting labels on people, respect their decisions and stop judging. Just because something is difficult to understand, it doesn’t mean that it is impossible.
